Elly De La Cruz Runs Reds To Victory As Dodgers’ Offense Struggles

The Los Angeles Dodgers returned home to host the Cincinnati Reds, but they may have left their bats on the road as they lost 7-2.

Tyler Glasnow made his 10th start of the season as he looked to build upon his Cy Young caliber season, but that wasn’t the case.

The outing proved to be a struggle for Glasnow as he pitched just five innings, giving up four runs on six hits with one walk and a solo home run. He did strike out eight hitters still, but it was tied for his shortest start of the season, along with his April 15 start and March 20 in Seoul, South Korea.

Will Benson opened the game with a leadoff home run against Glasnow, and for the rest of the night, Elly De La Cruz gave them troubles.

De La Cruz singled as the second hitter of the game and stole second base. He then came around to score on a double from Tyler Stephenson.

In the third, De La Cruz doubled to open the inning and promptly stole third. He ended up scoring when Stephenson singled to give the Reds a 3-0 lead.

It was once again De La Cruz who started his own rally in the fifth inning as he drew a walk and proceeded to steal second and third base. He then scored his third run of the game on a wild pitch from Glasnow.

De La Cruz’s 4 stolen bases in the game are the most by a Dodgers opponent since Jason Werth on May 12, 2009 at Philadelphia. Werth also stole four that game as the Dodgers lost 5-3.

De La Cruz was finally caught stealing in the seventh inning as it took a perfect throw from Barnes.

The Dodgers finally got on the board in the ninth inning with a two-out single from Gavin Lux after their hitters put together a small rally.

Following Glasnow, Alex Veisa pitched 1.2 scoreless innings before Nick Ramirez allowed three runs in 2.1 innings.

Dodgers pitching streak snapped

The Dodgers saw their streak of 22 consecutive games where their pitching staff allowed four runs or fewer come to an end. It set a new franchise record, which was previously 17 games before this season.

The longest such streak in the live ball era (since 1920) was set by the Cleveland Guardians in 2017 with 25 consecutive games.

Only two other teams other than the Guardians have reached 23 consecutive games since 1920, the 2010 Giants and 1972 Chicago Cubs. The longest streak in MLB history is a tie between the 1916 New York Giants and 1909 Chicago Cubs as both reached 29 games.
