Kyle Larson feeling confident ahead of his 'Double' attempt
NASCAR Cup Series driver Kyle Larson IndyStar-USA TODAY Sports

Kyle Larson offered a great quote Wednesday about his coming attempt at “The Double.”

Larson on Sunday, May 26, is attempting to become the fifth driver in history to race in the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 (to be run at Charlotte Motor Speedway). If he completes all laps in both races, he will have raced 1,100 miles in a two-day span.

Larson has been trying to get some practice in at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this week ahead of May 26th’s Indy 500. He was asked by a reporter about the demands of racing 1,100 miles across two different states in one day.

“If Tony can do it, I can do it,” Larson said.

Larson was referencing Tony Stewart, who attempted “The Double” twice. Stewart is the only driver to complete all 1,100 miles during the same attempt (accomplished in 2001). Stewart finished ninth in the Indy 500 and fourth in the Coca-Cola 600 in 1999. In 2001, he finished sixth in the Indy 500 and third in the Coca-Cola 600.

The other drivers to attempt “The Double” include John Andretti, Robby Gordon and most recently, Kurt Busch. No driver has had as much success attempting “The Double” as Stewart. Larson clearly isn’t too intimidated by Stewart’s success.
