Report: Spurs Have Expressed Little Interest In Acquiring Trae Young From Hawks

The Hawks are widely expected to consider trading Young this summer.

However, rumors about the All-Star landing with the Spurs “have been vastly overstated,” per Fischer. 

“However, according to multiple league figures with knowledge of the situation, any Spurs plans of maneuvering to bring Young to San Antonio have been vastly overstated,” Fischer wrote. “The Spurs, sources said, have expressed little interest in obtaining Young to date.”

Young averaged 25.7 points, 2.8 rebounds and 10.8 assists this season while shooting 43.0% from the field, 37.3% from beyond the arc and 85.5% from the free-throw line. He had 37 double-doubles in 54 games. 

Young signed a five-year, $215 million extension with the Hawks in August 2021. He’ll make $43 million next season and $45 million in 2025-26.

Young has career averages of 25.5 points, 3.6 rebounds, 9.5 assists, 1.0 steals and 0.2 blocks. He doesn’t have a no-trade clause in his contract. 

The Spurs are expected to try to acquire a lead guard this offseason, sources told Hoops Wire. They could reunite with Dejounte Murray, who will draw plenty of suitors this summer on the trade market. 

According to NBA insider Tim MacMahon of ESPN, Spurs star Victor Wembanyama is “intrigued” by the idea of playing with Young. However, it appears San Antonio’s front office doesn’t share that same stance. 

“I will say I’ve talked to people who know Wemby who have indicated he is at least intrigued by that idea,” MacMahon said on The Hoop Collective podcast. “Now, intrigued by that idea and pounding the table are two very different things. I have no idea whether Gregg Popovich would be intrigued by the idea.”

Young recently left Klutch Sports Group for CAA. He has been heavily linked to the Los Angeles Lakers.
